Cable Sleeving Guide

hardwareA basic guide with hints and tips on how to sleeve the cables in your pc using a sleeving kit such as the one from Vantec.

  • Choose the thinnest sleeving that will fit over the cable and cut it approximately 1 cm longer than the cable that you would like to sleeve. Use a sharp pair of strong scissors to get a nice straight cut( I used surgical scissors ).

03

  • If you try and stretch the sleeving over the cable now the edges will unwind and look very frayed and untidy. What I suggest is that you use matches or a lighter and lightly melt the end of the sleeving, do not use a blowtorch or similar as that gets much too hot. Refer to the picture below as a guide as to how much to melt the tip.

04

  • Use your small finger to seperate some of the strands. Compress the sleeve as shown in the picture below to fit over the beginning of the cable and / or the molex connector or whatever other plug. Using this method I did not have to remove any connectors.

05

  • Once the sleeve is in place use your fingers to even it out. Use small cable ties to secure the ends of the sleeving in place and then cut a small piece of heatwrap and slide it over the end of the sleeving making sure to cover the cable tie as well. Use a conventional hair blow-drier to heat up the heatwrap and watch as it shrinks to snugly fit the end of the sleeving. If you use a heat-gun be extremely cautious as it can damage the connectors and the cable itself. Make sure to use the narrowest piece of heatwrap that you can otherwise it may not shrink enough to look neat and tidy.

02

  • When you reassemble your pc try and hide as many of the cables as you can behind the motherboard tray, including any unused cables. Now marvel at how neat your pc looks ( especially if you have a windowed case ) and how much better airflow there is inside the case.
