This tutorial will aid people new to Joomla or Virtuemart through the process of adding a new product to their Virtuemart enabled Joomla e-Commerce or catalogue website. Please note that this tutorial was written based on Joomla 1.5.13 and Virtuemart 1.1.3 stable which were the latest versions at the time.

 

Step 1.

Logon to the administrator section of your website at http://www.yoursite.com/administrator

Step 2.

Type in your username and password at the administrator logon screen.

Step 3.

Hover over the Components menu item in the top menubar in the new screen that has loaded and click on Virtuemart.

Step 4.

Click on the "Product List" icon as shown below.

Step 5.

Click on the "new" icon as shown below.

Step 6.

Once the "New Product page" has loaded it will default to the "Product Information" tab. In the "SKU" input box type a unique product idetifier name or key such as prod001-22 for example. In the "Name" input box type the name that you have given your product. In the "Categories" box select a category that matches your product.

Step 7.

Also type in the price, vat information and a short description if applicable in the boxes shown below. (note that a long description can be typed into a box below these)

Step 8.

Click on the Product images tab. (note that for the purpose of this tutorial we will only be using the product information & product images tabs, the rest will be covered in a later tutorial)

Step 9.

Make sure to click the "Auto-Create thumbnail" box so that virtuemart will take care of creating the right size thumbnails of your image for you.

Step 10.

Click the "browse button" and locate and select the image you wish to upload from the screen that pops up.

Step 11.

Once the image has uploaded (this may take some time for larger images) click on the "Save" icon when you are satisfied with the information that you have entered. Don't worry if you have made a mistake, you can edit this information later.

Step 12.

A screen will load showing you the information that you have entered about your product. If you are happy with it you can click on "Product list" and upload more products or click on the name of the product that you have just entered to edit it.

Step 13.

Once you are finished adding or editing your products and you wish to exit remember to click logout on the top right hand corner of your window to close your session before you close your internet browser.
